ROBORANGMANCH
Bringing Stories
to Life Through Robotics

A portable, modular MDF puppet theatre powered by LEGO SPIKE Prime + EV3 + Quarky. We chose the under-told story of Savitribai & Jyotirao Phule — India's first female teacher and pioneers of girls' education — to make history feel alive, not textbook-distant.

Why this story

Savitribai Phule — the story
textbooks forgot to tell

Over-told tales like Ramayana are well known. We spotlight a reformer every child should know — India's first female teacher who opened the first girls' school in 1848 at Bhide Wada, Pune.

Problem → Insight

History feels distant when it is only read

Video and textbooks don't create emotional connection. Puppets add movement, music and empathy — children feel the struggle and courage.

From 1848 Bhide Wada to Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha (1863)

Four turning scenes on a rotating background: early life → school founded with Fatima Sheikh → social reform → legacy. Crowd conveyors show community, scissor lift brings protagonists forward.

Same theatre, multiple stories — scalable for schools, museums and cultural centres.

The machine

Four synchronized subsystems.
One stage.

Iterated from cardboard to LEGO to MDF — each mechanism position-controlled and speed-tunable. Built with SPIKE Prime, EV3 and Quarky AI board.

Rotating background system
SPIKE Prime • 1 motor

Rotating Background

4-way scene changer, position-controlled. Transitions from village to school to community without manual swap.

Iteration 3 • Stable
Flap raising and character extension
SPIKE + Color Sensor

Flap / Character Extension

Color sensor triggers flap raise; characters slide in synchrony with dialogue.

Sensor-timed
Dual conveyor crowd movement
2× EV3 Motors

Dual Conveyor Crowd

Belt + pulley crowd loop — adjustable speed to convey community support. Pulleys tuned for low friction.

Tunable speed
Scissor lift mechanism
EV3 + Gearing

Scissor Lift + Gear Prop

High-torque scissor for hero entry; rotating gear delivers props (books/slates). Three prototypes to achieve lift stability.

Prototype 3 • Final
Exploded kit

8 MDF parts • No tools • Portable

Folded 60×30×15 cm, durable MDF, UV-printed scenes, magnet joints. Assemble in minutes — tour to any school or museum.

AI & Code

PictoBlox + Quarky • Future-ready

ChatGPT for research, Gemini for visuals, PictoBlox ML for sound/voice, Quarky AI board for next: voice recognition, auto scene selection, smart LEDs.

How it works

A four-act flow, fully automated.

1

Story Sequence loads

Teacher selects Savitribai chapter; PictoBlox program queues the 4 mechanisms.

2

Background rotates

SPIKE Prime motor drives 4-way backdrop to correct scene — village, classroom, street.

3

Crowd moves + flap opens

Dual conveyor animates community; color sensor triggers flap and side characters.

4

Hero rises

Scissor lift elevates Savitribai/Jyotirao; gear delivers slate/book prop. Lights & narration carry emotion.

Tuning & Reliability

Tested edge cases, iterated 3×

We handled: belt slip (pulley tension), lift wobble (gearing & bracing), color misread (ambient calibration), motor drift (position control). Every show now runs hands-free after start.

Business Model

Not a one-show prop.
A rentable cultural platform.

From ticketed shows to school packages — the same theatre earns across venues and stories.

Revenue streams
  • Live performance bookings (schools / NGOs / CSR)
  • Ticketed shows — Rs 500–2,000 pp, 50–200 capacity
  • Theatre rental & custom sale (MDF kit)
  • Experience packages + workshops
Cost structure (kit only)
₹12–20kFabrication (CNC MDF, UV, magnets)
₹1–5kRobotics / graphics / story
Total kit: Rs 23,000–37,000 *without LEGO hubs (reusable across schools)
Channels & Customers

Primary: Schools, Museums, Cultural centres • Secondary: Events, CSR, Libraries • End users: Students, teachers, families

Why reusable wins

MDF scenes are magnetic-swapped. Change backdrops + character flaps + script → same hardware tells Gandhi, Ambedkar, Lakshmibai. Low incremental cost, high repeat bookings.

Live at Funkaar Studio

Audience-proven. Not just prototype.

Two public shows in Andheri West — children leaned in, not scrolled past. The curtain pulled, the crowd moved, Savitribai rose.
